Plunkett sits in the Rural Municipality of Viscount No. 341, and it takes its name from Viscount Horace Plunkett, an investor in the Canadian Pacific Railway. The village site lies between the railway to the south and Highway 16 to the north, at the point where Highway 16 meets Highway 365.
Plunkett incorporated as a village on December 28, 1921, and held village status for just over a century. On April 1, 2022, it restructured, giving up that status to become a special service area under the jurisdiction of the RM of Viscount.
The local economy draws on agriculture and mining, with mines located at nearby Lanigan, Colonsay, and Allan.
